Why aren't 100,000+ registered Grand Prairie voters voting in our local elections?
Local election turnout rates are abysmal, despite extensive early voting hours and mail-ballot options....we want to hear your opinion about it!
While it’s difficult to collect an exact number of registered voters in Grand Prairie without running for office, numerous searches across Google and Grok indicate the estimated number of registered voters in Grand Prairie is over 110,000. Grand Prairie ISD publishes the total number of registered voters with each election; in the most recent May 2025 election, it showed 63,381, which is just for Grand Prairians within GPISD’s territory. Keep in mind: The geographical boundary for Grand Prairie covers 6 school districts, with all homes south of Camp Wisdom in the Mansfield ISD.
For the 2024 general Presidential election, around 69,000 of the estimated 110,000 registered voters voted. In the May 2025 mayoral election, which is the most recent at-large city election in which all of those voters could vote, only 6,023 voters turned out. It’s estimated that in District 4 alone, there are around 19,000 registered voters and only 1,482 voters turned out in the May 3 general election, while only 1,142 turned out in the same district for the June 7 run-off election.
Grand Prairians are given ample opportunities to vote, even in runoff elections. There are multiple early election days, as well as mail-in ballot options.
So…what gives? Why do over 100,000 Grand Prairians just not seem to care about who represents them locally?
